[I just collected another example of this in action...I'm including the reply from the member at astrologyweekly.com that posted and asked for help understanding - resolving her rather debilitating 'T' Square.]
Note. I didn't read the replies from other members at this thread nor any further by the appealing member...so as to not influence my own objectivity.]
First let's take a look at the request:
"I have a very powerful mutable t-square in my natal chart and would love some insight into possible interpretations of it (situations, how it could be affecting my life, potential problems). And more importantly on how to handle it!
I've taken a hard hit since around late 2008-early 2009, really hard! Now I am just trying to get my life back in order, but for one reason or another things just keep falling apart =(
Hoping that maybe really disecting my t-square will help me find some direction or solutions. Help please!!!"
All oppositions are about 'Integration' of principles...and a 'T'* square is just a Grand Cross that is incomplete in form...but not function...
You see, every Planet in your natal is attempting to also become the symbolism of the opposite degree...or to integrate it to become complete...[which is probably the more appropo. explanation.]
Thus...remember that in a 'Grand Cross' situation what is occurring is the same as what occurs in ones chart axis via Rudhyars analysis..."Who"...'Where-To"..."How" & "Why"...Think of each Planet in a square as being the Asc....the "Who" and delineate from there using the formula provided by Dane. A "Grand Cross" offers a solution as it is about oppositions and integrating them ...conflict and a resolutive action.
...and here is something that is helpful to always remember and remind yourself. From June Wakefields book, "Cosmic Astrology" [she couldn't remember the source of this quote but said it "illustrates the value of the Square".]
"The Square is the aspect of strength and duty,
The Trine is the aspect of peace and beauty,
If to the moral of the first you be true
The second will be a servant to you"
Now lets look at all the symbols involved in this 'T' Square.
You've a Sun/Mars conjunction at one point in this matrix...one point of the 'beam' of opposing aspects.Sun 12* 20' 52" Gemini and Mars 12* 20' 58"
[I'll bypass the analysis of a Sun/Mars conjunction in Gemini as I'm sure you've already done so yourself by now and most certain the other members don't need to hear a review of what they already know.
Let's do note that it is a very strong one being as near a perfect conj. as I've ever seen in a natal chart.
And this is opposite a Jupiter/Uranus conj. in Sag. Lets do note [as I am an advocate of 'The Astrologers Handbook by Sakoian and Acker] that this conj. bestows interests...[ibid.] "...in new, progressive, and occult forms of religion such as New Thought, 'power of positive thinking', yoga or astrology. [these people] do not follow ordinary business procedures, educational endeavors or religious beliefs, but think and act for themselves with originality and ingenuity.
...generous toward their friends. They encourage other people who are also interested in doing worthwhile, unusual things. In politics they tend to be reformers and advocates of new political philosophies. They are generally in opposition to the established way of doing things"
The intense and powerful combination of the Sun/Mars conj...all that 'pumped up' will power, drive, determination and ego in opposition to the Jup/Uranus conj. manifesting as over zealousness for reform , proselytizing, doing things differently just for the shock value, amplified with more self will, hypersensitivity , individualness ...which added to the aforementioned 'originality and tendencies toward opposition to established ways...not to mention the extremely intense Masculine vibe this creates would leave most people that encounter you at any time 'you are not at your best' [mood, sociability, diplomacy...etc] a 'tad frightened...I would surmise.
As to the Sun/Jupiter opp. remember to cultivate a practical down to earth, impersonal attitude...especially when dealing with others, Curb impulses and urges towards grandiose schemes and ostentatious manners.
As to Sun/Uranus opp. ...It's know to create people that are high -strung, nervous, tense and irritable. It might delude one into believer they are more intelligent and talented than they really are...or if those do exist regardless, these people often don't use those gifts wisely. The opposition is known to cause erratic behavior and impatience and that thwarts all that drive and ambition and those abilities of superhuman like ability at sustained effort you have...which in turn diminishes any experience/education/understanding/wisdom of which you need to make practical use of those radical ideas and ways of doing things you have. Learn to control this...better yet...to overcome it.
Watch that over zealousness at promoting religious and philosophical views and opinions and quick temper and hair trigger tendency to argue and or fight that is the result of the Mars/Jupiter and the Mars/Uranus oppositions.
Now all the aforementioned is in a 'T' ...are in squares with your natal Moon... [Ugggggh....Oy Vey! ...If I may borrow a Hebrew expression...as it certainly fits this situation...]...I'll forgo doing the planet by planet and Sun square Moon and state it simply...]...it's in GREAT conflict with your emotional self...in a womans' case the majority of her beingness...
The 'T' in 'T' Square stands for 'Tension' ...in a sense, to put it succinctly and in mnemonic form..and that tension is released through the missing point, that is the empty point in the zodiac that if filled would make the 'T' Square a 'Grand Cross'. The mastery of which becomes a valuable and beneficial ability at solving conflicts.
From what I've obtained from Rudhyars writings and my own observations, investigations, deductions and have thus concluded is that an average must be found from all the players in the 'T' Square as to what the degree is of that missing point...in your case in Virgo.
Taking an average from your natal Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Uranus [...and, wow...do you have a lot of 'players' involved and especially as to the both the Sun and Moon...as this is affecting so much of your being and consciousness...it is really impacting your life...in my opinion.]
... that comes to apprx 08* 51'.
Now, in Degree enumeration designation that is called the 9th degree. [read the sticky in this sub forum if you need more understanding on that...basically , it is that there are 30 degrees in a sign and the option was; 'Do we number them zero through twenty nine or from one through thirty?'...that's all.]
The 9th degree of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces is the implied paradigm of perfection of the 'T' Square and thus also a 'Grand Cross' derived from it.
The conflict...that 'Tension'...of the 'T' Square is ideally expressed through the 9th degree Sabain Symbols for Gemini, Sagitiarius and Pisces and the resolution of this dilemma through the 9th degree of Virgo.
But, before we get to that lets take a look at the actual symbols that the Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Uranus are in [luckily...that God for small favors the Moon is in the 9th of Pisces and will make this analysis and explanation a little easier to convey and hopefully understand as well.]
The Sun and Mars both in the 13th degree of Gemini are represented symbolically as to their respective qualities and their conj. effect through [from Dane Rudhyar's book "The Sabian Symbols..."]:
" A FAMOUS PIANIST GIVING A CONCERT PERFORMANCE.
KEYNOTE: Individual fulfillment in the performing of a social function to which some prestige is attached.
...the individual person is able to become himself a source of inspiration...mobilize emotions... present to others an image... of becoming "more-than-man"...to experience more intensely and to see farther... role of the true and ideal "virtuoso" (vir meaning strength, manliness; thus "virtue")... leading [others] into new realms of experience...one might become, [at least, a]... potential SOURCE OF INSPIRATION."
[I should point out here the term used above and the context...Manliness...as to what I said about maybe coming on as too 'manly' for a woman...please don't take this to be a disregard of 'political correctness' on my part as to a belief in a manifest division of Man/Woman roles...I'm just labeling parts of a puzzle, here, in basic terms. Try to maintain an objective viewpoint.]
Now that, of which I've just given for the powerful energies of Ego, Will and Action, and as to what the Sun/Mars conjunction creates and is expressing, both their innate natures and their unity [their composite identity], in such a 'grandiose', dramatic and style full way [symbolically illustrated by the Sabian Symbol for the 13th degree of Gemini.] must now be regarded as the 9th degree of Gemini,as per in regard as to the paradigm of the 'T' Square, so as we can arrive to the eventual resolution of conflict...the 'Tension'...and by Rudhyar's book...once again.
(GEMINI 9°): "A QUIVER FILLED WITH ARROWS.
KEYNOTE: Man's aggressive relationship to natural life, as a basis for survival and conquest. The mind...is essentially a trans-piercing power; it goes through the object toward which it is aimed. It seeks to go through and beyond the obstacles on its path, and this usually implies the destruction of the obstacle. At a higher level — as in the Zen practice of archery — the obstacle is the ego....[this is an] archetypal symbol of Man, the Conqueror.... [be it a] conquest of outer nature, or that of instinctual drives and of the limiting power of the ego. It is always CONQUEST."
[these two symbols for both the 13th and the 9th of Gemini, and associated with a Sun/Mars conjunction, bring to my mind the old expression 'irresistible force and immovable object"...wow, you just might scare the living daylights out of people at times when you are on a mission, agenda, task, et al. ...IMHO...]
Now Jupiter and Uranus.
Jupiter, the Planet of Brotherhood, Friendship, Benevolence, Philosophy and Expansion... and in Sagittarius indicating a great love for Religious ideals and philosophies conjunct, coupled with Uranus, the Planet that is the higher octave of Mercury, which is known also as "The Great Awakener" in a positive view...or the 'Bestower of Sudden [and usually, often, 'Rude'] Change' from a negative viewpoint...the planet that confers higher 'Intuition'...new concepts, ideas, and in Sagittarius too. This means especially in regards to religion and philosophy.
Jupiter in the 6th degree of Sag. [ibid.]: "A GAME OF CRICKET.
KEYNOTE: The development of skill in group-situations testing collective goals. ...[and Rudhyar's keyword{s}] GROUP SOLIDARITY."
...that does sound very Jovian too...
.....................coupled with.......................
Uranus in the 7th degree of Sag. [ibid.] "CUPID KNOCKS AT THE DOOR OF A HUMAN HEART.
KEYNOTE: A stirring-up of individual longings for romantic love.
... ideal love tends to exalt individual characteristics... glorifies what seems able to fill poignant...[and/or] unconscious needs. Such a love... is...subjective which tends to bring to the lover a crisis or emotional chaos....a love [that] often turns asocial if not antisocial and is blocked or frowned upon by society....This...symbol is in direct opposition to that of the 'cricket game.'...[it] knows no rules and ignores collective purpose or dictates of reason... implied is a challenge to [Rudhyar's keyword{S}] EMOTIONAL REBIRTH."
Please note, that in an 'spiritual evolutionary' take on the zodiac the degrees are read as an unfolding of concepts of Cosmic [or God] Design that lead to ones advance, [eventual liberation from Karma and this world of illusion] when read in what is considered reverse order...thus after ones "Emotional Rebirth", one is expected to proceed to finding kindred souls and join in "Group Solidarity"
This combo of Jupiter/Uranus, their own innate natures and the composite effect of the conjunction of the two of them must now be thought of as the symbolism found in the Sabian symbol for the 9th degree of Sag. [ibid.]
"A MOTHER LEADS HER SMALL CHILD STEP BY STEP UP A STEEP STAIRWAY.
KEYNOTE: The need in any social situation to assist the less evolved in their management of the problems which society requires its members to solve.
A staircase...not...natural...to a very young child. Man...therefore is responsible for assisting the child to climb them step by step....implied is [Rudhyar's keyword{S}] SOCIAL CONCERN for the less evolved of society's members."
..seems like a beautiful and a most perfect way to utilize Jovian/Uranian composite energies longing to express itself though love and in league with others...and as Sakoian and Acker noted in their handbook: "Uranus also emphasizes humanitarian tendencies, very often expressed as cooperation in group endeavors."..that just is so in tenor...so in harmony with that!
So now we have two Divine or Cosmic Precepts...those of "CONQUEST" and of "SOCIAL CONCERN"...ego, willpower, action, aggressiveness & brotherhood, philosophy, religion, higher intuition, higher understanding, want of change ...trying to integrate with one another [as oppositions do truly represent from a positive viewpoint...i.e. 'Integration'...and a challenge to achieve it ...as opposed to the negative outlook, "Conflict", and without resolution as to which can overcome the other]...but having to contend with a 'Square to the Moon...the emotional nature of your being...and as I said the Moon is in the 9th degree ...it is both what it is and what it must be regarded as to the paradigm of the 'T' Square matrix or construct, [as you may want to call it]
symbolically represented by [ibid.]:
" (PISCES 9°): A JOCKEY SPURS HIS HORSE, INTENT ON OUT-DISTANCING HIS RIVALS.
KEYNOTE: Intense mobilization of energy and skill in the drive for success in any social performance affected by the competitive spirit. ...[and use of technical mastery from much training and practice]...[indicating a]... need [so perceived, anyways...an 'urge'] to spur one's total being toward speedy attainment of whatever goal it may be...[the] technical significance is quite evident. Every superfluous "weight," every unnecessary consideration is to be dismissed in the one-pointed attempt to reach one's social goal. SELF-QUICKENING may be the Keyword."
...if I may say so again...OY VEY...!...man..., willpower, action, determination and drive...trying to integrate with ;Higher' intuited, perceived beliefs/philosophies...portrayed as "CONQUEST" attempting to integrate with "SOCIAL CONCERN" for those challenged by those beliefs and concepts of yours through some sort of group solidarity....at odds with an emotional drive for some singular success...recognition...in the basest sense...hopefully you are not that self centered...then it should be seen as a impatient, unrelenting emotional type of angst for achieving goals [or a specific goal ...one that is of [admirably] 'social concern' for the less evolved of society.
Now to the release...the resolution of the 'Tension'...of the conflict of the 'T' Square... now viewed as a 'Grand Cross'...the resolution of conflict[s] through integrative action[s] ...it is found at the 9th degree of Virgo and trough the symbolism of the Sabian Symbol found there it may be so achieved....which is[ibid.]:
"AN EXPRESSIONIST PAINTER AT WORK.
KEYNOTE: The urge to express one's individualized sense of value regardless of tradition.
At this stage the individual is seen reacting against cultural standards and stereotyped ways of interpreting his perceptions. This is a statement of uncompromising self-reliance, which may even imply a kind of defiance and a challenge to society. The mind is seeking to discover the character of the basic and true foundation of individual selfhood, the AUM tone (or logos) of individual being. In the process, however, what is expressed is usually the reflection of a deep catharsis with emotionally charged and often tragic overtones.
This fourth stage symbol brings to us the hint of a technique of transformation of the personality. What predominates is a sense of inner conflict and an over-selfconscious attempt at "being oneself." But there is a great difference between being an origin of development pregnant with futurity, and deliberately sought for ORIGINALITY."
...remember that once a month the transiting Moon does occupy this degree and those are times you have probably been aware of this 'angst' and all...and as it is so transitory, possibly you've not recognized it in a positive manner...that is, no realization, no understanding of what it's effect on you is has been...nor an epiphany as to the resolution through integration and the wonderful utilization, that once integrated, it could subsequently be put to...but rather...especially in this days hectic and tumultuous world, so demanding of all our time and attention as it so seems...it's been a bothersome and debilitating mental quandary...eroding at your being...your mental, emotional and physical health too.
But there are also those times when a less ephemeral body does occupy it and those are the times you have to look at the inherent qualities of said influence and utilize the opportunity to bring the overall integration to fruition...and maybe a lil' meditation to help rein in that impatience, sense of urgentness....that, if you do recognize and agree, is a part of your being, has been so much of a stumbling block in the past..to the success you wish to achieve...and possibly has thwarted even anything beyond the conceptualization of as much at times in the past.
