The Astrological Record of the Early Sages
A New Series of Primary Source Texts in English
Translated with Extensive Commentary by Robert H. Schmidt
The culmination of more than fifteen years of research into Greek and Latin sources by translator Robert H. Schmidt, The Astrological Record of the Early Sages has been planned as a comprehensive 30-volume library of Hellenistic astrology in English translation. When complete, it will contain virtually all the astrological treatises and fragments that have survived in their original languages. Many of these source texts (which include some of the most important from the standpoint of astrological practice) have never before been available in English translation. In some cases, they have not yet been translated into any modern language. Such previous English translations as do exist have not been especially sensitive to the astrological content of these writings. The intent of the present edition is to draw out in detail ‒ and explicate fully – the theory and practice of Hellenistic astrology. To this end, the translated texts will be carefully sequenced, and published monthly or bi-monthly in a uniform format with standardized translation conventions. Each will have extensive textual, interpretive, and analytical commentary. An initial companion volume is being prepared that contains a glossary as well as other reference aids. When the entire series of translations is complete, a final volume will contain an elaborate index and concluding remarks. The Astrological Record of the Early Sages will soon make it possible for moderns to study all these texts firsthand and make an independent appraisal of the intrinsic merits and the broader implications of this ancient discipline. The Talking Tour of “TARES”

THE HEART OF THIS VOLUME is a work that no longer exists – the lost “Introductory Matters” attributed to an astrologer named Antiochus. This was a grievous loss because the original work consisted primarily of definitions of basic astrological concepts, many of which are used countless times by later Hellenistic astrologers without clarification. Luckily, a fairly substantial summary of the Antiochus work does survive, and in addition, there is surviving work by Porphyry and Rhetorius that drew on the same lost original. DEFINITIONS AND FOUNDATIONS compares these three basic sources and translator Robert Schmidt also brings in other related material in a Herculean effort to restore the lost original. Without the surviving sources brought together in this book and illuminated by Schmidt’s commentary, students of Hellenistic astrology would be deprived of an understanding of many basic concepts essential for astrological practice, particularly with regard to the subject of planetary configuration.
However, one should not imagine that the original book was a mere glossary. Even in summary form, there is a subtlety about this book that belies its elementary character. Enough clear evidence remains to testify that Antiochus (whoever he was) and other founders of Hellenistic astrology possessed a high level of intelligence, sophistication and metaphysical insight. Translator Robert Schmidt, despite his familiarity with many kinds of writings in ancient Greek, has never encountered anything quite like the “Antiochus Summary.” DEFINITIONS AND FOUNDATIONS: get it, read it, think about it.
