'Vettius VALENS of Antioch
An Intellectual Monography'

by Joanna Komorowska,

Krakow 2004, 480 pages, English
=================================================

The scholar has worked with Harvard U. and Warburg Inst.

Her book is mainly on the philosophy in Valens.
Almost nothing is said on the actual obsession of Valens- Astrology !

Many quotation in Greek (left untranslated).

Intellectualizing. Centers often on authorities (interpretation of other scholars.

====================================================

I read here and there only. The book deserves a reading though.

This is the scholar who writes on Valens and comments briefly on all 9 books of Valens.

Very strange that no word is given on the only translation in English of Valens made by Robert Schmidt !

Schmidt translated in 1996 the 4th book of Valens for the first time- i believe- in any modern language and Joanna published her scholarly book on Valens in 2004.
So, she had 8 years to learn about Schmidt's work.

There are some translations of Valens done by Bezza (very few chapters) in Italian and by Knobloch and Schoenberger (full translation) in German.
Bezza seems to be quite good but Knobloch is a horrible mess where nothing will help you find sense. I wonder at the audacity and the mishap of these guys.
I find Schmidt in the middle, but this was the 'early years' of his project.
ANy other translations ?
